n., The process of assessing the value of records for the purpose of determining the length and conditions of their preservation.

n., A basic archival function aimed at determining the disposition or disposal of records, that is, usually either their continuing preservation or their destruction. In some cases, records may be alienated from their creator. Appraisal involves making a judgement or estimation of the worthiness of continued preservation of records.
