[English Abstract: "Prof. Luciana Duranti is one of the most distinguished luminaries of global archival studies. Born in an Italian family where “almost everyone was a professor”, she received a thorough classical and historical education with a specialization in archival studies. She worked at the State Archives of Rome and lectured at the University of Rome. In 1987, she moved to Canada and has been working at the University of British Columbia ever since. Her knowledge and years of experience have allowed her to combine the medieval tradition of palaeography with cutting-edge technology. She has published papers on archival theory and methodology, and since 1999 has led the InterPARES project, possibly the longest-running international archival project. She actively combines Italian research traditions with Canadian, American, Australian, and Latin American concepts. In 2013, she launched the interactive Internet database known as MAT Multilingual Archival Terminology, which currently includes 23 languages thanks to multi-national cooperation." :: Book chapter (e-book preview link) ::

[Thibodeau, Director of NARA's Electronic Records Archives (ERA) Program, and member of every phase of the InterPARES Project, notes that "[t]o improve the knowledge base for digital preservation, NARA became one of the principal supporters of the [InterPARES] project, hosting both the initial organizing meeting of the project in 1998 and, in 2002, the final conference of what has turned out to be the first InterPARES project." (p. 98) As Thibodeau points out, a key advantage possessed by InterPARES is its ability to focus "the efforts of experts from a varity of disciplines and countries on the specific problem of guaranteeing the authenticity of electronic records over time." (p. 99) "The project," Thibodeau continues, "has articulated clearly and coherently the specific requirements for assessing and certifying the authenticity of electronic records, and produced a richer understanding of the relationships between the archival an the digital properties of the records. In its process models of selecting and preserving electronic records, the InterPARES project has delineated the decision processes involved in these activities, providing archives and other institutions responsible for digital preservation a firmer and broader basis for evaluating and selecting information technology products on the basis of archival criteria."
